Każdy słynny region winiarski ma w swojej historii nieśmiertelne wina, których legenda trwa nie tylko wiele lat po ich stworzeniu ale trwać bedzie dalej nawet wtedy gdy ostatnia butelka zostanie dawno wypita lub ulegnie zniszczeniu. Przykładami takich legendarnych win z regionu Bordeaux są:

W tak zwanym Nowym Świecie również Australia i Kalifornia doczekały się w swojej historii  legendarnych - nieśmiertelnych win. W przypadku Australi bedą to na pewno pierwszy rocznik Penfolds Grange (Hermitage) czyli 1952 a także Penfolds Bin60A Coonawarra Cabernet Kalimna Shiraz rocznik 1962, które to wino uważane jest za najlepsze wino australijskie kiedykolwiek wyprodukowane. Szersze opisanie najwspanialszych win Australii to temat na osobny artykuł albo i książkę.

Poniżej skrótowo prezentuję 10 legendarnych win kalifornijskich. Kryteriami mojego wyboru były:

- fenomenalna jakość tych win, dzięki której od początku swojego istnienia wyrastały znacznie powyżej swojej kalifornijskiej konkurencji

- wyjątkowe zainteresowanie jakim te wina cieszyły się nie tylko w swojej młodości ale przez cały czas swojego życia aż do dzisiaj 

- bardzo małe ilosci tych win, które przetrwały do dzisiaj co sprawia, że są one bardzo trudne do kupienia a w niektórych przypadkach  jest to obecnie (prawie) niemożliwe

Each famous wine region has in its history immortal wines, whose legend lasts not only many years after their creation, but will continue even when the last bottle is long drunk or is destroyed. Examples of such legendary wines from the Bordeaux region are:

In the so-called New World also Australia and California have in their history legendary - immortal wines. In the case of Australia, it will certenly be the first vintage of Penfolds Grange ( Hermitage) 1952 as well as Penfolds Bin60A Coonawarra Cabernet Kalimna Shiraz 1962, which is wildy considered as best Australian wine ever produced. The wider description of Australia' finest wines is a topic for separate article or even a book. Below, I brefly present 10 legendary California wines. The criteria for my choice were:

- phenomenal quality of these wines, thanks to which from the beginning of their existence, they grew significantly above their Californian competition

- the unique interest that these wines enjoyed not only in their youth but throughout their lives, up today.

- very small quantities of these wines that have survived till today which makes them very difficult to buy and in some cases it is ( almost) impossible now

1. Inglenook Cabernet Sauvignon 1941, Rutherford    

Wino powstało z legendarnej winnicy Inglenook, która istnieje do dzisiaj, jej obecnym właścicielem jest reżyser Francis Ford Coppola (Ojciec Chrzestny, Czas Apokalipsy). Lata 40te były w Kalifornii trudnym czasem powolnego odrodzenia winiarstwa po katastrofie okresu prohibicji. Warunki pogodowe w roczniku 1941 były idealne a ówczesny winmaker wytwórni Inglenook czyli John Daniel Jr. stworzył wino nie do natychamiastowej konsumpcji tylko o wieloletnim okresie dojrzewania (doskonalenia się). James Laube z magazynu Wine Spectator, który próbował to wino w 2001r. twierdził, że jest ono w stanie dalej sie rozwijać przez 20-30 lat albo i dłużej. Trudno się o tym będzie przekonać bo pojedyńcze butelki tego wina są zbyt cenne i stanowią zbyt dużą wartosć historyczną żeby je otwierać. Być może Coppola ma w piwnicy Inglenook jeszcze kilka butelek, które zechce sprzedać lub otworzyć i podzielić się publicznie wrażeniami.

The wine was produced from the legendary Inglenook vineyard, which exists until today, its current owner is the director Francis Ford Coppola (Godfather, Apocalypse Now). The 1940s were a difficult time in California for a slow revival of viticulture after the catastrophe of the Prohibition period. Weather conditions in the 1941 vintage were perfect and the winemaker of the Inglenook winery - John Daniel Jr. created wine not for adventurous consumption but for long haul (decades of aging and improvement). James Laube from the Wine Spectator magazine who tried this wine in 2001 claimed that it is able to develop further for 20-30 years or longer. It will be difficult to find out because single bottles of this wine are too valuable and are too big a historical value to open them. Perhaps Coppola has several bottles in the Inglenook cellar that he wants to sell or open and share public impressions.

 

2. Chappellet, Cabernet Sauvignon 1969, Pritchard Hill

Wino od którego zaczęłą się kariera Philipa Togni oraz wytwóni Chapellet, wino które udowodniło niesamowity potencjał wzgórza Pritchard Hill do produkcji światowej klasy win. Togni twierdzi że na początku lat 70tych kupowali to wino bezpośrednio w wytwórni Chappellet zwykli amerykańscy konsumenci (bynajmniej nie koneserzy/kolekcjonerzy) i pili je do hamburgerów i frytek. Nieliczne ocalałe do dzisiaj butelki mają status "białych kruków". Do dzisiaj uważany za jednego z głównych kandydatów do miana "najwspanialszego wina cabernet sauvignon kiedykolwiek zrobionego w Kalifornii".

The wine from which began the career of Philip Togni and the Chappellet winery, a wine that proved the amazing potential of Pritchard Hill for the production of world-class wines. Togni claims that at the beginning of the 1970s, American consumers bought this wine directly at the Chappellet winery (by no means connoisseurs / collectors) and drank it to hamburgers and fries. The few bottles that have survived until today have the status of "rarity". To this day, considered one of the main candidates to be called "the greatest wine Cabernet Sauvignon ever made in California". 3. Stag's Leap Wine Cellars, Cabernet Sauvignon S.L.V. 1973, Stag's Leap 
Wino zrobione przez Warrena Winiarskiego, które wygrało w kategorii win czerwonych sławną degustację porównawczą w Paryżu 1976r. Butelka tego wina jest eksponatem w Muzeum Smithsonian w Waszyngtonie jako jedna ze 101 rzeczy, które stworzyły Amerykę („101 Objects That Made America”)

  The wine made by Warren Winiarski, who won in the category of red wines the famous comparative tasting in Paris in 1976. A bottle of this wine is exhibited at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington as one of "101 Objects That Made America"

 

4. Heitz Cellars, Cabernet Sauvignon Martha's Vineyard 1974, Oakville 

 Joe Heitz od końcówki  lat 60 a następnie w 70tych i 80tych razem z takimi producentami jak Al Brounstein, Robert Mondavi, Chappellet,  Beaulieu Vineyards był czołową postacią kalifornijskiego winiarstwa. Jednak w latach 90-tych wszyscy ci producenci zostali zepchnieci w cień przez nową falę kultowych producentów.

Flagowe wino Heitz produkuje z winnicy Martha's Vineyard, której znakiem wyróżniającym był niuans eukaliptusowy-miętowy oraz nieprawdopodobne zdolności do doskonalenia się z wiekiem. Legenda głosi że nuta eukaliptusowo-mietowa w tym wine związana była z ogromnymi drzewami eukaliptusowymi otaczającymi winnicę jednak Joe Heitz nigdy nie wierzył w tą legendę.

Joe Heitz from the end of the 60's and then in the 70's and 80's along with producers such as Al Brounstein, Robert Mondavi, Chappellet, and Beaulieu Vineyards was a leading figure in Californian wine-making. However, in the 1990s, all these producers were pushed into the shadows by a new wave of iconic producers. The Heitz flagship wine is produced from the Martha's Vineyard, whose distinctive hallmark was the eucalyptus-mint nuance and the incredible ability to improve with age. Legend has it that the eucalyptus note in this wine was associated with the huge eucalyptus trees surrounding the vineyard, but  Joe Heitz never believed in this legend.

5. Diamond Creek, Cabernet Sauvignon, Lake Vineyard 1978, Diamond Moutain

Al Brounstein produkuje wino z czterech winnic ( Volcanic Hill, Red Rock Terrace, Greavelly Meadow i Lake) w górach Diamond Moutain na północnym krańcu doliny Napa. Najmniejszą z nich jest Lake, zajmującą tylko 3/4 akra i daje wino w mikroskopijnych ilościach (poniżej 100 skrzynek). Rocznik 1978 Diamond Creek Lake był pierwszym winem kalifornijskim, które na początku lat osiemdziesiątych osiągnęło na aukcjach jak na tamte czasy nieprawdopodobną cenę 100 USD za butelkę. Ponieważ winnica Lake ma najzimniejszy mikroklimat, potrzebuje nadzwyczajnych warunków pogodowych by grona perfekcyjnie dojrzały dlatego od roku 1972 tylko w 16 rocznikach wyprodukowano to wino.
 Al Brounstein produces wine from four vineyards (Volcanic Hill, Red Rock Terrace, Greavelly Meadow and Lake) in the Diamond Moutain district at the northern end of the Napa Valley. The smallest of them is Lake, occupying only 3/4 acres and gives wine in microscopic quantities (less than 100 cases). The 1978 Diamond Creek Lake was the first Californian wine, which at the beginning of eighties reached an unbelievable price of USD 100 per bottle at the auctions. Because the Lake vineyard has the coldest microclimate, it needs extraordinary weather conditions to make the grapes perfectly ripe, so from 1972 only in 16 vintages this wine was produced.

 6. Groth, Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve 1985, Oakville

Pierwsze wino kalifornijskie, które dostało od Roberta Parkera 100/100pkt. Winiarnia założona w 1982r w okręgu Oakville przez Dennisa i Judy Groth w celu produkowania najlepszych win cabernet sauvignon jakie można było zrobić w dolinie Napa w latach 80-tych. Pieniądze na zbudowanie wytwórni Dennis Groth zdobył współtworząc legendarną dzisiaj wytwónie komputerów Atari. Sukces rocznika 1985 spowodował, że klienci ustawiali się w kolejkach bezpośrednio w winiarni, żeby co roku kupić kolejne roczniki Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve, rzecz zupełnie niespotykana w latch 80-tych w Kalifornii (natomiast typowa w latach 80-tych dla sklepów w PRL). Ten gigantyczny sukces komercyjny został powtórzony w latach 90-tych przez wytwórnie win kultowych, które tworzyły listy subskrybcyjne na swoje wina, w sytuacji kiedy popyt wielokrotnie przewyższał podaż win. 

The first Californian wine which received perfect score 100/100pts from Robert Parker. Winery founded in 1982 in the Oakville district by Dennis and Judy Groth to produce the best cabernet sauvignon wines that could be made in the Napa Valley in the 1980s. Dennis Groth earned the money to build the winery, co-creating the legendary Atari Corporation. The success of the 1985 vintage meant that customers lined up in the winery year by year to buy Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve, something completely unheard of in the 80's in California (but so typical in the 80's for shops of the communist economy in Poland). This gigantic commercial success was repeated in the nineties by the cult wineries, which created subscribtion lists for its wines, in sitaution when the demand repeatedly exceeded the supply of wines.

7. Screaming Eagle, Cabernet Sauvignon 1992, Oakville

Pierwszy rocznik sławnego "The Eagle", od którego zaczęła się era kalifornijskich win kultowych lat 90-tych. Wino stworzone przez byłą agentkę nieruchomości Jean Philips (właścicielka) i Heidi Barrett (winemaker). Barrett była na początku lat 90-tych winemakerem w leżącej po sąsiedzku wytwórni Dalla Valle i stworzyła kultowe wino Dalla Valle Maya (za 1992r dostało 100/100pkt od R.Parkera). Jej właściciel Gustav Dalle Valle nakłonił Barrett do tego aby pomogła początkującej właścicielce nowej winnicy czyli Philips w produkcji wina i tak zaczęła się niesamowita historia Screaming Eagla. Na aukcji charytatywnej w 2000r. butelka o pojemności 6 litrów Screaming Eagle 1992r. osiągnęła cenę  500 000 USD. Do dzisiaj jest to najwyższa cena zapłacona z butelkę wina.
The first vintage of the famous "The Eagle", from which began the era of Californian cult wines of the 90s. Wine created by former real estate agent Jean Philips (owner) and Heidi Barrett (winemaker). At the beginning of the 90s Barrett was winemaker in the neighboring Dalla Valle winery and created the iconic Dalla Valle Maya wine (for 1992 it earned 100/100pts from R.Parker). Its owner Gustav Dalle Valle persuaded Barrett to help begin the owner of a new winery - Philips in wine production and that's how the amazing Screaming Eagle story began. At the charity auction in 2000 bottle with a capacity of 6 liters Screaming Eagle 1992. has reached the price of USD 500,000. Until today, it is the highest price paid for a bottle of wine.

8. Sine Qua Non, Queen of Hearts Rose, 1995, Central Coast

Założycielem wytwórni Sine Qua Non jest urodzony w Austrii Manfred Krankl, który jako ceniony restaurator w Los Angeles postanowił samemu zacząć robić wina, które by mógł oferować klientom swojej restauracji Campanile. Tak powstała w 1993r. wytwórnia Sine Qua Non na środkowym wybrzeżu pomiedzy San Francisco a Los Angeles, która jest zaliczana bezdyskusyjnei do kultowych kalifornijskich producentów.
Różowe wino Queen of Hearts, które wyprodukowano tylko w 300 butelkach w roczniku 1995 nie było sprzedawane w normalnej dystrybucji, wszystkie butelki zostały wypite lub podarowane w gronie znajomych Krankla dlatego uważane jest za najrzadsze i najtrudniejsze do zdobycia wino z tej kultowej wytwórni.
Jedyna butelka obecnie w sprzedaży jest wystawiona w Londynie za przeszło 88 tysięcy funtów (!!!) co czyni ją najdroższym winem w  butelce o standardowej pojemności 0,75l na świecie.
The founder of the Sine Qua Non winery is Manfred Krankl, who was born in Austria and who, as a valued restorer in Los Angeles, decided to start making the wines himself that he could offer his Campanile restaurant customers. It 1993. Sine Qua Non winery  was created on the Central Coast between San Francisco and Los Angeles, which widely considered as cult Californian producer. Rose Queen of Hearts, which were only produced in 300 bottles in the 1995 vintage, was not sold in the normal distribution, all bottles were drunk or donated in the circle of Krankl's friends, therefore it is considered the rarest and most difficult wine to get from this iconic winery. The only bottle currently on sale is exhibited in London for over 88,000 pounds (!!!) which makes it the most expensive wine in a bottle with a standard capacity of 0.75l in the world.

9.  Colgin, Cabernet Sauvignon Herb Lamb Vineyard 1997, St. Helena 

Ann Colgin wraz z ówczesnym meżem Fredem Schraderem założyła w 1992r. wytwórnię win nie mając własnej winnicy i własnych gron do produkcji wina, podpisała więc umowę na skupowanie gron z malutkiej winnicy położonej na wzgórzach za miastem Santa Helena, której właścicielem był Herb Lamb. Dopiero po roku 2000 Colgin zaczęła produkcję wina z dwóch własnych winnic czyli Tychson Hill i IX.

Olbrzymi sukces jaki osiągnęło od swojego debiutu w 1992, Colgin Cabernet Sauvignon Herb Lamb pozwolił na uzyskanie statusu kultowego dla wytwórni Colgin jako jednej z pierwszych w Kalifornii. Rocznik 1997, którego wyprodukowano tylko 400 skrzynek ma reputację najlepszego z pietnastu roczników (1992-2007) kiedy to wino powstawało. Od roku 2008 to wino nie jest już  produkowane a rodzina Lamb sama wytwarza wino z własnej winnicy, niestety jego jakość nie jest porównywalna z jakością uzyskiwaną w Colgin Cellars. 

Ann Colgin, together with the then husband Fred Schrader, founded in 1992. winery, not having its own vineyard and  she signed a long term contract for buying grapes from a tiny vineyard located in the hills outside the city of Santa Helena, owned by Herb Lamb. It was not until 2000 that Colgin started making wine from her two own vineyards, Tychson Hill and IX. The enormous success that its made since the debut vintage - 1992, Colgin Cabernet Sauvignon Herb Lamb allowed Colgin winery to become cult as one of the first in California. The 1997 vintage, which was  produced only 400 cases, has the reputation of being the best of fifteen vintages (1992-2007) when the wine was made. Since 2008, this wine is no longer produced and the Lamb family itself produces wine from its own vineyard, unfortunately its quality is not comparable with the quality obtained in Colgin Cellars.

10. Bryant Family, Cabernet Sauvignon 1997, Pritchard Hill

O Donaldzie Bryancie pisałem już we wpisie dotyczącym kultowych kalifornijskich producentów. To były biznesmen i kolekcjoner sztuki, który w latach 80tych przeniósł sie z St. Louis do północnej Kalifornii. Od rocznika 1992 produkuje w swojej winnicy na Pritchard Hill niewiarygodnie wspaniałe wino robione w 100% z cabernet sauvignon, jedno z najbardziej poszukiwanych win w Ameryce. W latach 90tych winemakerem była legendarna Helen Turley, która obecnie prowadzi swoja kultową wytwórnię Marcassin w Sonomie. Rocznik 1997 Bryant Cabernet Sauvignon podobnie jak w przypadku Colgin Herb Lamb Cabernet Sauvignon uznawany jest za najlepszy z lat  90tych czyli ze "złotej ery" kalifornijskiego winiarstwa. Zamiast pisać jakieś ogólniki czy slogany o tym winie po prostu przytoczę notkę degustacyjną Roberta Parkera z The Wine Advocate nr 126 z 2000r.:

A Cabernet of unbelievable richness, explosive thickness, unctuosity, purity, and flavor intensity, this is a freakish wine, but greatness is never typical or normal. Picked at what must have been phenomenally high sugars, this port-like, mammothly rich wine exhibits a thick, black/blue/purple color as well as extraordinary notes of jammy blueberries, blackberry liqueur, sweet, smoky oak (100% new Taransaud barrels were used), licorice, and floral scents. There are no hard edges, only fascinating, provocative, and compelling levels of extract, glycerin, and fruit. Will everybody find this extraordinary? Anticipated maturity: now-2040. Make no doubt about it, this is one of the world's most majestic Cabernet Sauvignons. Score:100/100

Czasami pojawiają się wątpliwosci czy tego typu wina mogą dobrze dojrzewać( doskonalić się) przez wiele lat. W bazie win www.cellartracker.com oceny Bryant Cabernet Sauvignon 1997 umieszczone przez szczęśliwców, którzy mogli je wypić w ostatnich trzech latach to: 98,94,97,97,99,99,93,97,98 a jak widać z notki Parkera określił on okres dojrzewania tego wina aż do 2040r.

I have already written about Donald Bryant in previous article about California iconic wineries/producers. He was a businessman and art collector who moved from St.Louis to northern California in the 1980s. Since 1992, in its winery at Pritchard Hill, has been producing incredibly great wines from 100% cabernet sauvignon grapes, one of the most sought after wines in America. In the 1990s, the legendary Helen Turley was the winemaker, who currently runs her cult Marcassin winery in Sonoma. Vintage 1997 Bryant Cabernet Sauvignon, as in the case of Colgin Lamb Herb Cabernet Sauvignon is considered the best from the 90s, that is from the "golden era" of Californian wine industry. Instead of writing any general or slogans about this wine, I will simply quote Robert Parker's tasting note from The Wine Advocate No. 126 from 2000:

Sometimes doubts arise whether these types of wines can age well (improve) for many years. In the database of wines www.cellartracker.com ratings for Bryant Cabernet Sauvignon 1997 placed by the lucky ones who could drink them in the last three years are: 98,94,97,97,99,99,93,97,98 and as you can see from Parker's note he determined the period of aging of this wine until 2040.
